Join our team as a volunteer!
SFC is a volunteer powered organization, and we need help at every level! Whether you can give two hours a month or want to volunteer every weekend, love working from home/remotely or enjoy the hands-on work at our headquarters building with intake, baths, and walks, there's something for everyone to do!
Volunteers must be 18+ to directly interact with animals, or 16 with a parent/guardian present. Families with children under the age of 18 are welcome to help with other tasks.
The first step is to watch our Volunteer Overview Video (approx 15 minutes). If after watching, this seems like something you are ready to do, please follow the link below to sign up!

Become a Volunteer!
Volunteers are currently needed for the following HIGH PRIORITY projects:
EVENTS
Adoption Event Volunteers (typically Saturdays, with variable shifts from 11:15-4:30) : Hold a dog, interact with cats/kittens, and talk to interested potential adopters to help homeless animals find their forever homes!
Adoption Event- Adoption Processors (typically Saturdays, with variable shifts from 10am-4:30pm) : Help process adoptions and unite SFC pets with their new families! Must be able to learn our adoption software and discuss medical history (will train) with new pet parents.
HEADQUARTERS
Cleaning Master (any time Tues-Fri, 10-6, or Saturday 12-4): Our headquarters in Spotsylvania is always in need of some extra hands to work on laundry, dishes, kennel cleaning/power washing, and general upkeep and organization.
Dog Walking/Playtime (any time Tues-Fri, 10-6): We have long-stay, new intakes, and larger dogs at HQ that would love some one-on-one play time in our play yards or a walk in the nearby Spotsylvania Battlefields!
Intake (Wednesdays, 2:30-4/5): Our new arrivals typically come in on Wednesday afternoons, and almost always need a bath in addition to their medical intakes before they head out to foster care. Intake volunteers can expect to help with bathtime, feeding, preparing supplies for fosters, and kennel setup/cleaning. Experienced and willing intake volunteers can also learn how to assist with intake exams!
REMOTE/AT-HOME
Foster Case Manager: Case managers play a vital role on the foster team by providing mentorship to fosters new and old, giving advice and sharing wisdom, facilitating communication and safety reminders, and more importantly, are responsible for an animal’s journey from placement in foster to spay/neuter or adoption. They are the immediate point of contact for all foster parents, and the intermediate between SFC and Team Squishyface. This is a commitment of up to 10 hours a week. Access to the internet via cell phone and/or computer is required for this role. Case Managers must be able to handle communication with fosters and the rest of the SFC team in a timely manner and respond to requests in a reasonable timeframe. Case Managers should have a positive attitude and be actively engaged in supporting their team of foster parents.
To apply as a foster case manager, email us today at [email protected].
Donor Relations: Help keep us up to date on thanking and recognizing our amazing donors by completing "thank yous" for those who donate from our Amazon wishlist or donate via our website!
Admin/Database Wizard: All of our paper documents are scanned in by the team at SFC, but we need help making sure they are uploaded into our database correctly! This can be done fully remotely on a computer at your home, with a 1-2 hour/week time commitment.
Social Media Coordinator: SFC Virginia is looking for a volunteer social media wizard to join our team! We are looking for someone experienced with social media marketing for businesses or nonprofits (or specifically animal rescue) who can help us tell our stories, help get animals adopted, and expand our reach on Facebook and Instagram.
Major responsibilities include:
-Creation of written content for day-to-day Facebook posts/IG Posts
-Scheduling posts on Facebook/IG
-Responding to comments and private messages on Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms
-Maintain an updated events calendar
-Interacting with other pages on social media and cross-promoting with partners
-Sharing popular pet culture videos, news, stories, and other content
-Audit website content quarterly
-Create graphics for social media posts, features, SFC website, and print material
Assistance with photography and potentially attendance at adoption events (to help document them) would be a bonus as well, although we will consider someone not local to Fredericksburg. Must be able to type and communicate clearly, answer messenger inquiries timely and compassionately, and truly be a part of the operational team here working hard to save lives.
Photography: Help our pets look their best and attract potential adopters! Our dogs and cats in our HQ in Spotsylvania or at our local events would love to pose for some good photos for their website bios.
