When our six founders met in 2017, they discovered a shared passion for rescuing animals. Then they were fosters, case managers, event coordinators, matchmakers, shelter volunteers, and foster and intake coordinators. They became fast friends, and started us on this passion project that has now surpassed our wildest dreams and expectations. We are the Squishy Face Crew!
SFC is organized around connecting foster families and adopters in the Spotslvania area and beyond with dogs and cats who have found themselves homeless and in need of a fresh start. Virginia is a regional leader in the no-kill movement, with a live release rate of 90% as of 2024 - but we have a long way to go to reach the national goal of No-Kill 2025, and understand that maintaining VA's No-Kill status requires ongoing hard work and cooperation. We hope to play a leading role in helping the state maintain a 90% live release rate by transferring in animals from underserved county shelters and other rescues that work directly with these shelters, and find adoptive homes in our area.
We are a foster-focused rescue, which means that we do not maintain a large physical shelter, and all animals in our care remain in foster homes until they are adopted. We are committed to open, low-barrier adoptions, which means that we use honest, open-ended conversations to engage potential adopters and help them find the best fit for their families. In most cases, our pets can be adopted directly from the foster parent or at an adoption event after a meet and greet. We believe that removing barriers to adoption is truly lifesaving, and enables us to help more animals that have found themselves without a home, and may be facing euthanasia as a result.

Our Results
Each year, the Virginia Department of Agriculture collects information from all releasing agencies (rescues and shelters across the state) for their annual report, which is open to the public and shared online. This data includes information on all animals taken in during the year, how many were adopted out, and much more.
