Virginia Shelters + Rescues
As foster space and availability allows, we run a weekly transport to Staunton, VA to transfer in animals from Southwest Virginia shelters and rescues. We also run smaller transports on an as-needed basis around the state to take in other animals.
We are always happy to add more VA shelters and rescues in need of transfer assistance to our list of partners. Please email ryan@sfcva.org to establish contact and see how we can work together.
Owner Surrenders - not adopted from SFC.
Our mission is to help animals already in shelters, where they may be at risk for space-related euthanasia. Unless there are special circumstances, we do not take in pets from community residents that were not originally adopted from SFC. We are very fortunate to have multiple progressive shelters dedicated to lifesaving in this area, all of whom do an excellent job at finding new families for the animals in their care. We highly recommend contacting the Spotsylvania County Animal Shelter or the Stafford County Animal Shelter if you are a county resident in need of relinquishing your pet.

Owner Surrenders - originally adopted from SFC
While there is a person for every animal, we know not every animal is for every person. If you adopt an animal from SFC and discover you are not compatible, or your life circumstances change, we will always take our pets back to find them new homes- though we do ask that you give yourself, your new pet, and all other members of your family at least a week post-adoption to see how they will settle into your home.
New people and environments can be scary, and a little time and patience goes a long way! In the event that returning your pet is the best option, we will ask for any medical records acquired since the time of adoption and will require completion of a brief history and personality form so that we can make a better match for that pet in the future. If you adopted from us and would like to request a return, please fill out our form here. We will do our best to respond to your request within 48 business hours.

It is important to note that we are not an open-admission sheter and do not always have immediate space available to accept returns. We are generally able to find a foster home or a space at our HQ within two weeks of a return request.
Found Kittens
Summertime means kitten season, and we are already inundated with requests to intake kittens! There is almost no group of animals more vulnerable to space or illness-related shelter euthanasia than kittens, as shelters become easily overwhelmed and overcrowded over the warmer months. If you are local to the Fredericksburg area and find a kitten or litter of kittens, check out the following graphic for immediate steps before contacting one of our area cat rescues: A Tail to be Told, Purrs & Whiskers, the Fredericksburg SPCA, or Cause 4 Paws.
If you find a kitten or litter of kittens and are willing to foster them until they are old enough for adoption, please contact us at foster@sfcva.org.
